When my daughter Diani was born in June 2016, I thought I understood what it meant to love a child, but nothing prepared me for the tenderness that erupted inside me. She had me wrapped around her little pinkie from day one.
At birth, doctors picked up a heart murmur. “Not to worry, she’ll probably outgrow this,” they said. Months later, on 29 May 2017, the DNA results arrived: Diani had been diagnosed with Williams Syndrome, a genetic condition so rare that it affects less than 0.01% of people. For us, that tiny statistic suddenly became real, thrust into an uncertain future.
In that moment, dreams shattered, and our carefully curated world tilted out of balance. But Diani didn’t.

“one who is blessed.”
Diani carried on in her own carefree, sunshine-filled way. Smiling at strangers, comforting anyone who looked sad, and offering love without hesitation. Her friendliness is infectious, her empathy instinctive. She brightens days without even trying.
In kindergarten, her caretakers started calling her “Didi.” Beyond being a sweet nickname, it holds a special meaning in parts of Africa: “one who is blessed.” And blessed she is. Not because life is easy, but because she meets every challenge with courage and a heart wide open.
Yes, she struggles more than some of her peers. But she tries harder than most. She practices until she gets it right. She loves without limits. She inspires us every single day.
My journey with ice cream began during Season 2 of MasterChef SA, when The Creamery appeared in one of the episodes. Curiosity turned into experimentation, and soon, making ice cream became more than a hobby. It became a way to create small moments of joy.
As our family navigated Didi’s diagnosis, those moments mattered. Crafting flavours, sharing scoops, seeing smiles. It became a quiet way of saying: there is still sweetness, even here.

DiDi Gelato is where two worlds meet: the happiness of our girl, and the passion of her dad to create joy.
Every flavour is crafted with care, every cup served with the hope that it does for you what Didi does for us: lighten the day, soften the edges, remind you that joy is still possible.
Our promise is simple: a smile in your heart, with every bite. Because sometimes, a scoop of gelato is more than dessert. It’s a little reminder that dreams can bend, but they don’t have to break.
